Facebook Feed: The New Spam Filled Inbox

by Nicole Carlsen on February 26, 2013

facebook_spam

Update: It seems I was not the only one wanting to organize my feeds, Facebook is rumored to roll-out multiple feeds  on Friday, March 7, according to PR Daily. I’m excited to see how these changes will work and be received by the notoriously “scared of change” Facebook community.

I am finally blogging again and I hate to rejoin the blogging world with a gripe but I’m going to. Is it just me or is your Facebook feed beginning to look more like your spam filled email inbox of years past?

I love that my friends are passionate and want to share it but my god my Facebook feed is filled with petitions to sign, photos of abused animals, Pinterest boards and videos/photos that you shared from some page that apparently collects those things. And it’s not like they are all different, I can’t count how many times my friends have shared the story about the waiter in Houston who lost his jobs for refusing to serve a disrespectful table.  It’s a great story, don’t get me wrong, but I also saw it on the news and all over my Twitter feed.

I’m not saying I don’t enjoy some of the videos and photos. There are some great meme’s that people are finding and literally last week I watched this video and started balling like a baby and promptly made my boyfriend watch and got a chin quiver and a tear out of him.

There are many stories that I love reading and probably wouldn’t have discovered had a friend not shared it on Facebook … but it’s getting overwhelming.

I use Facebook and Twitter a bit differently. In my opinion Facebook is for friends/family/acquaintances/coworkers, etc and I want to keep up with what’s going on in their lives: kid and pet photos/life updates/engagements/weddings/new jobs, etc. I use Twitter as more of an industry outlet, I follow social media, news, industry experts, etc and share things a bit differently then I would on Facebook.

So my proposal is that Facebook find a home for these “spam” posts. I don’t want to get rid of them all together but can they have a home that doesn’t disrupt a post from an old high school classmate’s beautiful engagement photos?

Am I alone here?  Is your Facebook feed filled with more and more “spam”?

Can’t Decide Where to Start? Just Bake Something…

by Nicole Carlsen on September 6, 2012

Second week of grad school down and I am starting to get organized both physically and mentally. I have an enormous to-do list screaming at me that I hate looking at so what did I decide to do? Start at the least important but most delicious, zucchini bread :)

A friend of mine, whose garden is doing much better than mine is, was nice enough to give me three enormous zucchini’s from her garden. Josh is out of town and there is no way I could eat all of that zucchini myself.  I also have a collection of frozen banana’s in the fridge waiting to be turned into banana bread so I decided to try to find a recipe for a combo bread.

If you haven’t checked out PunchFork.com you should. It is a collection of recipes from top food sites all over the Internet. It is also a great place to search for recipes if you have random ingredients. Just plug in what you have and voila there is a recipe.

Here is the recipe I used. I substituted raisins for chocolate chips, although I wish I had used less.

Zucchini Banana Bread
2 eggs
1/4 cup honey
1 cup banana
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup whole wheat pastry or white whole wheat flour (like King Arthur)
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 heaping cup zucchini (1 small to medium), shredded
3/4 cup raisins (I like golden)
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 350°F; lightly grease a standard sized loaf pan.

2. In a large mixing bowl beat eggs, banana, honey, sugar, and vanilla until smooth.

3. In a separate bowl whisk the flours, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon together. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, then stir in the zucchini, raisins and walnuts.

5. Pour batter into pan. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean from center. Cool pan on wire rack for 20 minutes then turn out from pan and cool completely on wire rack.

On Sunday morning a little after 8 a.m. I was in bed snuggling with the pup when I heard a large boom and the shades in my room hit the windows a couple of times. I immediately thought earthquake but thought it was odd that the ground didn’t move but my shades shook. After looking [...]
