Virginia City Grand Prix

This weekend is the 41st Annual Virginia City Grand Prix. Who’s going? I will be there to watch on Saturday and support my boyfriend (everyone needs a camerawoman) who is racing on Sunday.

The race starts at 10 a.m. and lasts about 3-4 hours. It is on a combination of terrain including rocks, single track, trails and paved road. Various levels of experience and bikes can enter. Saturday’s race will include experts and amateurs and Sunday will be novice, vintage (1974+) bomber (1975-1984), women and masters (age 60+).

It is a pretty fun race to watch. They shut down the main street in Virginia City and put the hundreds of riders in lines of 10 letting each line go every 15 seconds (photo of start above). After the start it is nice to walk around town, check out the pits and the booths set up with food, drinks and music. You can also hike out along the trail to watch the riders. It is about 26 miles a lap so you have time to do some exploring.

My advice is to pack a cooler with lunch and drinks and wear walking/hiking shoes and sunscreen. Prepare to get a little dusty if you are going to be watching the race up close and have fun!

Hey Todd, Sorry it took so long to reply. They don’t have the official dates posted but it is always the last weekend in April. So I am guessing April 26 & 27. Keep an eye out on their website for the latest http://www.vcgp.com.
